Dangers of Asbestos - Pic 1

Dangers of Asbestos

Calgary’s ASTRA Restorations understands the dangers asbestos poses to long-term health and stresses the importance of asbestos awareness.

If you suspect asbestos in your Calgary home or workplace, contact ASTRA Restorations. Do not handle the material yourself—disturbing it will put you, your family, or your employees at greater risk.

Asbestos causes long-term, often fatal, health problems, even long after exposure and particularly when inhaled. Sufferers of asbestos exposure don’t notice the inhalation of fibres and don’t feel effects until later.

Long, fine asbestos fibres pose an even greater risk. When asbestos material (i.e., tiles, insulation, and siding) is damaged or moved, fibres become airborne. Once airborne, these asbestos fibres are easily inhaled, often unnoticed.

When inhaled, sharp asbestos fibres penetrate the lungs and respiratory tract, causing long-term health problems and cancers. These illnesses include but are not limited to the following:

  • Asbestosis: Asbestosis is a hardening of lung tissues that makes breathing difficult. This disease is progressive and irreversible. It is caused by microscopic damage to lung tissues that forms scar tissue. This scar tissue cannot stretch the way normal lung tissue can and thus creates debilitating and fatal breathing problems.
  • Lung Cancer: Lung cancer is a serious and fatal form of cancer. Risk of this cancer is compounded in individuals who smoke and have been exposed to asbestos.
  • Mesothelioma: Mesothelioma is rapid, fatal, and incurable cancer of the lung linings.

Calgary’s ASTRA Restorations has teams of specialized and certified technicians capable of effectively and efficiently removing asbestos from your home or workplace. We have the know-how and tools to make your Calgary property safe from asbestos.
