How does mould get in your building?

Calgary-based Astra Renovations specializes in mould remediation. We have the expertise, certified training, experience, and specialty equipment to safely restore your home, commercial, or industrial property so that it is once again safe for you and your family or employees.

While you should never remove toxic mould yourself, knowing how to recognize mould and how it can enter your property is essential to mould-prevention and knowing when to contact an expert.

Though mould exists in the natural environment and we are in contact with it on a daily basis, moulds become problematic when their spores colonize materials inside the buildings we live and work in. They do this by attaching themselves to damp and water-damaged surfaces, especially in humid spaces with little air circulation. Buildings affected by flooding and other water damage provide the perfect environment for mould spores to colonize. Burst pipes, sprinkler head failures, plumbing issues, roof penetrations, or even small leaks can lead to serious health hazards, both quickly and later on.

Mould is especially prevalent in humid environments and water-damaged buildings, including those affected by flooding, sewer problems, and water leaks. However, mould problems are not always easily seen. Mould can be found behind walls, under floorboards, and in other hard-to-see places. Even hidden, mould will still seriously affect air quality.

The use of improper building materials and poor ventilation can leave some environments particularly susceptible. Extensive flooding in Calgary and Alberta in 2003 left homes, commercial spaces, and warehoused water-damaged. Moulds are especially successful at colonizing damp drywall and wallpaper. They can flourish in office towers where water damage may not be made a priority. Once established, mould spores will spread throughout the building, including through ventilation systems.

If you suspect mould in your home or workplace environment, contact Astra Restorations as soon as possible. We work hard, expertly and efficiently, to restore your home, commercial, or industrial property so that it is once again safe to inhabit.
